There is only one exception, where you don’t need a car in Algarve. If you plan to spend your entire holiday in Albufeira Old Town and intend to stay mostly on one nearby beach, you can manage without a rental car. However, you will miss many of the places that make the Algarve internationally famous.

The motorway operates through the Via Verde toll system, with costs generally ranging between €1.50 and €2.50 per section depending on distance travelled. Most rental vehicles are equipped with the necessary toll device, but it is worth confirming when collecting your vehicle. 
 

Parking advice
 

Parking is usually straightforward outside the peak season. However, summer is different.
 

At famous locations such as Benagil, Praia da Marinha and Ponta da Piedade, parking areas can be full even before mid-morning. During July and August, arriving before 9:00 AM is strongly recommended. 
 

For less famous beaches, parking remains relatively easy even during the summer months.
 

Beach access roads
 

One detail many visitors underestimate is road quality near some hidden beaches.
 

Certain coastal viewpoints and lesser-known coves are accessed only through gravel tracks. While these roads are usually manageable, they may not be suitable for every vehicle.
