Europe's warmest winter island is cheaper than you think
Berlin’s and Copenhagen’s temperature may be around 2°C, Paris and London may be grey and rainy, and much of northern and central Europe is already ready for winter coats. Meanwhile, on Tenerife’s south coast, daytime temperatures can still climb above 20°C and people are sitting by the pools or walking along the beach in T-shirts.
That’s why Tenerife has become one of Europe’s favorite winter sun destinations. And despite its all-year-round reputation as holiday resort, a winter escape here does not require a luxury budget.
Why Tenerife stays warm when Europe freezes
Tenerife may belong to Spain, but geographically it is located much closer to Africa than to mainland Europe. The Canary Islands lie near the northwest coast of Africa, roughly at the latitude of southern Morocco and Sahara Desert, which explains why the Canary islands in winter have mild climate.

The result is an island where you can leave a sunny beach in the morning, drive through pine forests and clouds, and find yourself in a volcanic landscape at more than 2,000 meters just one hour away.
South vs North: Two islands in one
Choosing between northern and southern Tenerife is not simply about finding the best hotel. The two sides can be completely different destinations, especially during winter.
The sunny south: Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos and El Médano
If sunshine during winter is your main priority, southern Tenerife is usually the safest choice.
Costa Adeje is the best resort option, with beaches, restaurants, hotels and long seaside promenades. It is particularly suitable for families or couples who want an easy winter break where most things are close by.
Los Cristianos has a busier, more lively atmosphere. Its harbor, restaurants and beaches make it a practical base, while its location is convenient for exploring the southwest coast by car.
El Médano is ideal for lovers of wind sports. Close to Tenerife South Airport, it has a more relaxed character and is particularly popular for windsurfing and kitesurfing. It is a good choice if you prefer a smaller coastal town to a large resort.
For anyone visiting Tenerife in November or December mainly for sunshine, the south also has the advantage of less rain. Historical climate data for Tenerife South Airport shows around 26 mm of average rainfall in November and 30 mm in December, which is the fewest rainfall in Europe.
The green north: Puerto de la Cruz and the lush forests
Northern Tenerife is greener, cooler and generally wetter, but that is exactly what makes it special.
Puerto de la Cruz is the obvious base, combining traditional Canarian architecture, oceanfront streets and easy access to the lush landscapes of the north. It is not a typical beach resort, but more a tropical place from where you can discover a world you haven't imagined.
From here, having a car opens up a very different Tenerife. You can explore La Orotava, drive through mountain scenery or continue towards the ancient laurel forests around Anaga.
However, remember that the north receives more winter rain. Santa Cruz, for example, records an average 43 mm in December compared with 30 mm at Tenerife South Airport. But if you want hiking, greenery and traditional towns rather than spending every afternoon beside a pool, the trade-off can be worth it.
And keep in mind that Tenerife is compact enough that you do not really have to choose. Stay in the sunny south and drive north for the day, or do the reverse.
The Teide road trip: Driving to 2,300m before breakfast
This is the journey that changes the way you see Tenerife.
Leave the coast early in the morning, climbing by car through villages and pine forest before reaching a landscape that looks increasingly less Mediterranean and more like another planet.
Eventually, you arrive inside Teide National Park, surrounded by volcanic rock and the enormous silhouette of Mount Teide, Spain’s highest peak.
The cable car base station sits at around 2,350 meters, and the drive there is part of the experience. From the south, the TF-21 climbs from the direction of Vilaflor, while other routes enter the national park from the north and west.
The mountain is located approximately an hour’s drive from many parts of Tenerife and around 47 km from Los Cristianos.
If you go early you may find yourself driving above a blanket of clouds while the coast below is still waking up.
This is also where renting a car in Tenerife really makes sense. Instead of organizing your day around a tour timetable, you can stop at viewpoints, stay longer inside the national park and continue along a different route afterwards.

Another option is to choose El Médano for a smaller-town atmosphere, watersports and quick access to Tenerife South Airport.
If sunshine is less important than scenery and local character, Puerto de la Cruz makes a stronger base in the north. You will probably see more clouds and occasional rain, but you are much closer to Tenerife’s green valleys, traditional towns and northern landscapes.
The most interesting option for a seven-day trip? Split your stay by spending four or five nights in the south and two or three in the north, using a rental car to turn the transfer itself into a road trip.
What a winter week costs
Tenerife is not the ultra-cheap winter escape it once was, but it can still offer good value compared with many other destinations offering similar temperatures.
Accommodation varies enormously, with location, type of hotel, dates and early booking making a major difference.
