Road trips in the United Arab Emirates

You need a valid driver’s license, your passport and a credit card in your name. Regarding specifically the driving license, you need an International Driving Permit (IDP).

The UAE drives on the right side of the road, and seat belts are mandatory for all passengers. Speed limits are strictly enforced using cameras, especially on highways. Mobile phone use while driving is prohibited unless hands-free. Traffic fines can be high, so following signs closely is essential.

Some cities use electronic toll systems, such as automated toll gates on major roads. Rental cars are registered for automatic billing. There is no vignette system. Parking fees apply in city centers, malls and business districts.

Driving in the UAE is generally very safe, with excellent road quality and clear signage. Highways are easy to navigate, but desert or mountain routes require more attention and preparation. Weather is usually predictable, though sand and heat can affect visibility. GPS works reliably across the country.

The best time for road trips is late autumn to early spring (October to April), when temperatures are mild and driving is comfortable. Summer brings extreme heat, especially inland and in desert areas. Coastal routes remain accessible all year-round. The ideal season depends on how much time you plan to spend outside the car, as during summer is almost impossible to stay outside.
