About three to four hours depending on traffic. The E03 expressway shortens it, but the old A1 through the hills is more scenic.

Where To Stop
Recommended Stops from Colombo to Ella
Five stops that climb from royal temples to misty railway bridges.

Temple of the Tooth, Kandy
Kandy's lakeside temple houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha, the most venerated object in Sri Lankan Buddhism. Evening puja ceremonies fill the shrine with drumming, chanting and the scent of lotus. The town's colonial-era market and botanical garden at Peradeniya deserve a morning.

Ramboda Falls
This 109-metre cascade tumbles beside the road between Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, visible from the car and accessible via a short path to the viewing platform. A tea shop at the base serves fresh hill-country tea with a view of the falls. Ten minutes and entirely worth the stop.

Nuwara Eliya & Pedro Tea Estate
At 1,900 metres Nuwara Eliya feels like a fragment of the English Home Counties transplanted to the tropics: a racecourse, a post office, and manicured gardens. Pedro Tea Estate offers guided tours through the plucking, withering and rolling process, ending with a tasting of the finished product.

Nine Arch Bridge, Ella
This elegant colonial viaduct arches through tea plantations and jungle, and when a blue train crosses at dawn the scene is one of Sri Lanka's most photographed moments. Reach the viewpoint via a signposted path from Ella town; arrive before 7am for the softest light and fewest people.

Little Adam's Peak, Ella
A gentle 45-minute hike from Ella town leads to a grassy summit with 360-degree views over the Hill Country. Tea estates, distant peaks and the Ella Gap all spread before you. It is the perfect sunset walk and requires no technical skill.

Hill Country Road Trip FAQs
Roads are paved and drivable, but local driving style is assertive. Drive on the left, use the horn on blind bends, and allow extra time for mountain sections.
December to March is driest in the Hill Country. April-May and September bring occasional rain but green, lush scenery and fewer visitors.
Yes. Many travellers drive to Kandy, take the scenic train to Ella as a one-way experience, then arrange car transfer. Alternatively, driving the same route lets you stop at every viewpoint.
Fuel stations are available in Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella. Fill up before leaving each town as mountain stretches between them have limited options.
