Where To Stop
Recommended Stops Along the South Coast
Five stops from colonial ramparts to empty tropical sand.

Galle Fort (UNESCO)
The Dutch-built fort encloses a living town of boutique hotels, galleries, cafes and churches within its coral-stone ramparts. Walk the walls at sunset, visit the Maritime Museum, and browse the craft shops along Church Street. Parking is available just outside the fort gates.

Unawatuna Beach
Just east of Galle, this sheltered crescent of golden sand has gentle waves, a coral reef for snorkelling and a strip of beachfront restaurants. The Japanese Peace Pagoda on the headland offers a panoramic view. It is the south coast's most swimmable beach.

Mirissa & Whale Watching
Mirissa is the south coast's whale-watching capital: between November and April, boats head out before dawn to spot blue whales, sperm whales and dolphins. The town's own beach is a relaxed crescent with good surf at the point. Book boat trips a day ahead.

Dikwella & Hoo-maniya Blowhole
The coast road east of Mirissa passes Dikwella, where a natural blowhole shoots seawater through a rock formation during high swells. The nearby Wewurukannala temple houses a 50-metre seated Buddha that makes an unexpected roadside stop.

Tangalle Beach
Tangalle is where the south coast empties out: long, palm-backed stretches of golden sand with few buildings and powerful waves. Medaketiya and Goyambokka beaches are the standouts. Stay overnight to experience the sunset and the morning stillness before driving back.

South Coast Road Trip FAQs
