Drive from Tirana into the Wild Heart of the Albanian Alps

The road from Tirana to Theth packs an entire country into two days. You start among the cafes of the capital, pause at Kruja's hillside bazaar where Skanderbeg once held off empires, and follow the plain north to Shkodër, one of the oldest cities in the Balkans. Then the real driving begins. The SH21 to Theth is now fully paved, but it earns its reputation honestly: steep climbs, tight hairpins and a final descent into a valley walled in by 2,000-metre peaks. Travellers who made this drive consistently call it the highlight of their Albania trip. Having your own rental car from Abbycar means you can pull over at every viewpoint on the Qafa e Thores pass, linger in Theth as day-trippers leave, and set your own pace on the switchbacks. Pick up your car at Tirana Airport and the mountains are yours within three hours.

Begin Your Albanian Alps Adventure in Tirana

Tirana is a lively, fast-changing capital, and its airport is the most convenient gateway to northern Albania. Collect your Abbycar rental right at the terminal and you skip the transfer into the city entirely; the highway north towards Kruja begins minutes from the exit. Before leaving, it is worth a coffee stop in Tirana's Blloku district to see the city's energetic cafe culture. From the airport, the full drive to Theth takes about 3.5 hours without stops, which is exactly why this route works so well as a relaxed two-day loop.

Where To Stop

Recommended Stops on the Tirana to Theth Route

Five stops that turn the drive north into a journey through Albanian history and into its highest mountains.

1
First stop
View in Kruja Castle & Old Bazaar

Kruja Castle & Old Bazaar

Perched on a mountainside 40 minutes from Tirana, Kruja is where national hero Skanderbeg resisted the Ottomans for 25 years. The castle museum tells that story well, but the cobbled Ottoman bazaar leading up to it is the real charmer, lined with antique dealers, carpet weavers and copper workshops. Arrive before 10am to browse in peace and grab a mountain-view coffee before the tour buses climb the hill.

Second stop
View in Rozafa Castle, Shkodër

Rozafa Castle, Shkodër

Rozafa Castle crowns a rocky hill where the Buna and Drin rivers meet, with Lake Shkodra shimmering to the west and the Alps rising to the east. The fortress walls date back to Illyrian times and the legend of Rozafa, walled into the foundations, is one of Albania's most famous folk tales. The 360-degree view from the ramparts is the best preview you will get of the mountains ahead.

Third stop
View in Mes Bridge (Ura e Mesit)

Mes Bridge (Ura e Mesit)

A short detour outside Shkodër brings you to this graceful 18th-century Ottoman bridge, arching high over the turquoise Kir river. At over 100 metres long it is one of the largest of its kind in the Balkans, and in summer locals swim in the clear pools beneath it. It is a quick, quiet stop with easy roadside parking, and it photographs beautifully in morning light.

4
Fourth stop
View in Qafa e Thores Pass Viewpoint

Qafa e Thores Pass Viewpoint

The high point of the SH21, both literally and emotionally. After a long climb through beech forest, the road crests the pass and the entire Theth valley opens beneath you, ringed by the jagged limestone of the Accursed Mountains. There are safe pull-offs on the descent where you can stop for photos. Take the hairpins slowly and use engine braking on the way down, the views deserve an unhurried driver anyway.

5
Fifth stop
View in Theth Village & the Church of Theth

Theth Village & the Church of Theth

Theth is the picture that sells Albania: a scattering of stone houses and a tiny shingle-roofed church on a green valley floor, dwarfed by peaks on every side. Stay overnight in a family guesthouse, eat home-cooked mountain food, and walk to the Grunas waterfall or the Blue Eye of Theth the next morning. Staying the night means you experience the valley at its quietest, after the day visitors have driven back down.

Practical answers for driving from Tirana to Theth

Albanian Alps Road Trip FAQs

Yes. The SH21 was fully asphalted in recent years, so a standard rental car handles it comfortably in good weather. It remains a genuine mountain road with steep gradients and hairpin bends, so drive patiently and use low gears on the descent into the valley.

Late May to early October is ideal. The pass can close after snowfall in winter, typically from November until April. June and September offer the best balance of open roads, green scenery and fewer visitors than the July and August peak.

It is possible but rushed, with around seven hours of driving return. Splitting the route over two days with a night in a Theth guesthouse is far more enjoyable and lets you fit in Kruja, Shkodër and a valley hike without watching the clock.

No. Since the road was paved, a regular car is sufficient in the May to October season. A compact rental with decent engine power makes the climb easier, and picking it up at Tirana Airport with Abbycar puts you on the road north within minutes of landing.

Fill up in Shkodër before starting the mountain section. There are no fuel stations between Boge and Theth, and the climb uses noticeably more fuel than flat driving. A full tank in Shkodër covers the entire mountain loop with a comfortable margin.
