Beyond the Mosta dome the landscape opens into ridges and valleys that fall to the only real sandy beaches Malta has, and the day unfolds as a string of short, rewarding hops: fifteen minutes here, ten there, sea views almost the whole way. This loop takes in the third-largest unsupported dome in Europe and its famous wartime miracle, the golden sweep of Għajn Tuffieħa and Golden Bay, the primary-coloured film set of Popeye Village, hilltop Mellieħa with its grotto and vast sandy bay, and finally the Red Tower on Marfa Ridge, where the view runs across the channel to Comino and Gozo stacked in blues. Mosta Rotunda
The Rotunda's dome, among the largest unsupported domes in Europe, dominates central Malta, but the story inside is what stays with visitors: in April 1942 a Luftwaffe bomb pierced the dome during Mass with 300 people present, and failed to explode. A replica of the bomb sits in the sacristy. The blue, gold and white interior is dazzling, and paid parking lies a short walk away.

Golden Bay & Għajn Tuffieħa
Two of Malta's rare sandy beaches share one glorious stretch of northwest coast: Golden Bay with its easy access, kiosks and water sports, and quieter Għajn Tuffieħa over the headland, reached by a long staircase that filters the crowds. The Red Tower & Marfa Ridge Comino Viewpoint
St Agatha's Tower, painted an unmissable ox-blood red, has watched the Gozo channel since 1649, and its roof remains the finest natural balcony in the north: Comino and its pale lagoons in the foreground, Gozo behind, and the whole ridge of Marfa falling away on either side. The short drive along the ridge afterwards passes little chapels and picnic spots. Late afternoon light turns the entire channel to glass.

With young children, generally yes: the shows and characters land well with the under-tens. Without children, the free clifftop viewpoint over Anchor Bay captures the film set's charm in one photograph, and your time may be better spent at the beaches or the Red Tower.
You will see it beautifully, from the Red Tower and Marfa Ridge, and the classic view over its lagoons is a highlight of the day. Setting foot on Comino requires a boat from Ċirkewwa or Marfa; the crossings are short and easily added as a half-day extension.
Mosta uses paid street parking and small lots near the Rotunda; Golden Bay, Popeye Village and the Red Tower have dedicated car parks; Mellieħa Bay parking lines the coast road. In July and August aim to reach each beach before 10am or after 4pm for a stress-free spot.
