Reddit travellers unanimously say yes. Buses exist but cannot reach the caldera viewpoints, hot springs or tea plantation on your schedule. The island is compact and driving is easy.

Where To Stop
Recommended Stops Around São Miguel
Five stops from crater lake to underground kitchen.

Sete Cidades & Vista do Rei
The twin lakes, one blue and one green, fill a 12 km caldera and are best seen from the Vista do Rei viewpoint on the western rim. The drive down to the lakeside village adds a boat ride option. Come early for the clearest skies; afternoon clouds often roll in.

Lagoa do Fogo
São Miguel's wildest crater lake sits at 575 metres, surrounded by untouched vegetation and accessible via a steep trail from the rim road. On clear days the water glows an impossible blue-green. There are no facilities, which is exactly the point.

Furnas Hot Springs & Terra Nostra Garden
The village of Furnas steams with geothermal activity. The Terra Nostra botanical garden contains a huge iron-rich thermal pool surrounded by exotic plants, and the lakeside fumaroles cook the famous cozido das Furnas, a stew buried in volcanic ground for six hours.

Caldeira Velha Hot Springs
A jungle-like setting of ferns and waterfalls hides a natural hot spring pool at the foot of a warm cascade. It feels tropical despite being in the mid-Atlantic. Entry is timed and limited; book online to guarantee a slot.

Chá Gorreana Tea Plantation
Europe's only commercial tea plantation spreads across the hillsides above the north coast. Free self-guided tours explain the process from planting to cup, and the tasting room offers black and green teas with ocean views. The surrounding fields of bright-green tea bushes are photogenic from every angle.

São Miguel Azores FAQs
The Azores have four seasons in a day. Bring layers and rain gear. If a caldera is in fog, try again later or the next morning; skies often clear by 10am.
Yes. Terra Nostra and Caldeira Velha are well-maintained with changing facilities. Note that the iron-rich water stains swimwear orange permanently; bring a dark pair.
June to September is warmest and driest, though the Azores are mild year-round. July-August hydrangeas line every road in vivid blue.
About 65 km long and 15 km wide. No drive takes more than an hour, making it ideal for day-loop exploration from a Ponta Delgada base.
