Where To Stop
Recommended Stops in Maramureș
Five stops through Europe's most traditional living landscape.

Baia Mare Old Centre
The mining city's medieval core features the Butchers' Bastion and Stephen's Tower, a Gothic belfry. It is the natural first stop after crossing the Gutâi Pass, with good cafes and parking. The surrounding hills offer views back over the valley.

Merry Cemetery, Săpânța
This unique cemetery replaces sombre tombstones with brightly painted wooden crosses, each bearing a witty, rhyming verse narrating the life (and sometimes the death) of the deceased. The church beside it continues the tradition. It is folk art, social history and dark humour in one unforgettable place.

Bârsana Wooden Monastery (UNESCO)
The slender wooden church at Bârsana, with its needle-like steeple reaching 57 metres, is the finest of the UNESCO group. The monastery complex around it is lovingly maintained, and the hilltop setting among apple orchards is quintessential Maramureș.

Budești Wooden Church (UNESCO)
The 1643 church at Budești Josani is one of the best-preserved wooden churches, with interior frescoes depicting the Last Judgement in vivid, naive style. The keyholder lives nearby and is happy to open the church on request.

Sighetu Marmației & the Memorial of Victims
The former political prison in Sighetu is now a powerful museum documenting communist-era repression. The town itself is a pleasant Maramureș base with a daily market, traditional architecture and views across the Tisa river to Ukraine.

Maramureș Road Trip FAQs
Most churches are locked but the local keyholder (usually a villager) opens them on request. A small donation is customary. Arrive during daylight hours for the best chance.
Late spring to early autumn offers the best weather and access. Haymaking season (June-July) is the most photogenic. Winter brings snow and shorter days but festive village traditions.
Main roads are paved and fine. Some village lanes are unpaved but short and drivable slowly. Watch for horse carts, especially on market days.
Village guesthouses (pensiuni) in Bârsana or Breb offer the most authentic experience, with home-cooked meals included. Sighetu Marmației has more conventional hotels.
