Tirana to Lake Ohrid & Korçë: Albania's Quiet Southeast by Car

Most visitors race for the Albanian coast, which is precisely why the southeast rewards drivers so generously. This three-day route from Tirana follows the old trade road through Elbasan, drops to the UNESCO-listed waters of Lake Ohrid at the fishing village of Lin, and continues along the shore to Pogradec and the crystal springs of Drilon. From there the road climbs to Korçë, a city of boulevards, museums and the best coffee culture in Albania, before a final winding ascent to Voskopoja, once one of the largest cities in the Balkans and now a mountain village guarding remarkable fresco-filled churches. Distances are short and the roads are good, so with an Abbycar rental from Tirana Airport you spend your time at lakeside tavernas rather than behind the wheel. It is Albania at its most authentic, and it is best reached on four wheels.

Begin Your Southeast Albania Journey in Tirana

Tirana Airport sits conveniently on the northwest edge of the capital, and picking up your Abbycar rental there lets you bypass city traffic entirely on your way southeast. If you have a spare hour, Tirana's Skanderbeg Square and the colourful Blloku quarter make a lively introduction to modern Albania. The drive to Lake Ohrid takes around two and a half hours, which means you can land in the morning and be eating grilled Koran trout by the water the same afternoon.

Where To Stop

Recommended Stops in Southeast Albania

Five stops that string together lake, city and mountain into one unhurried loop.

1
First stop
View in Elbasan Castle

Elbasan Castle

Roughly halfway between Tirana and the lake, Elbasan's 15th-century Ottoman fortress still shelters a lived-in old town within its walls: houses, cafes, a mosque and an Orthodox church side by side. It is an easy leg-stretch stop with a genuine everyday atmosphere rather than a museum feel. Park outside the walls and wander in for a coffee under the plane trees.

Second stop
View in Lin Village, Lake Ohrid

Lin Village, Lake Ohrid

Lin is a tiny peninsula village of stone lanes and fishing boats on one of the oldest lakes in the world. Its prehistoric pile-dwelling heritage is part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing, and the hilltop above the village hides early Byzantine mosaic floors. Come for lunch: the family tavernas serve lake fish metres from the water, and the view across to North Macedonia is unforgettable in the soft light.

View in Drilon Springs & Pogradec Lakefront

Drilon Springs & Pogradec Lakefront

Just east of Pogradec, ice-clear springs bubble up through white sand at Drilon, feeding channels shaded by willows and crossed by little bridges. Swans glide past waterside restaurants, and the whole park has an easy, old-fashioned holiday feel. Combine it with a stroll along Pogradec's lakeside promenade, a favourite evening ritual for local families, before settling in for the night by the water.

Fourth stop
View in Korçë Old Bazaar

Korçë Old Bazaar

Korçë carries itself differently from the rest of Albania: broad boulevards, a grand Orthodox cathedral, and a beautifully restored Ottoman bazaar whose cobbled square fills with cafe tables in the evening. The National Museum of Medieval Art here holds an exceptional icon collection, and the city's beer, brewed since 1928, is a point of local pride. It is the natural overnight base for the highland finale.

View in Voskopoja & Its Painted Churches

Voskopoja & Its Painted Churches

In the 18th century Voskopoja was a Balkan metropolis with dozens of churches and its own printing press; today it is a serene village at 1,160 metres, wrapped in pine forest. Several churches survive, their interiors covered in vivid frescoes by the celebrated Zografi brothers. The 30-minute drive up from Korçë is a joy in itself, and the cool mountain air makes it a beloved summer escape for locals.

Southeast Albania Road Trip FAQs

Around two and a half hours to Lin village via Elbasan on mostly good asphalt. Adding a castle stop in Elbasan turns it into a pleasant half-day, leaving the afternoon free for the lakeshore.

May, June, September and early October are ideal, with warm lake days and clear highland air. July and August are lively but hotter in the lowlands, while Voskopoja can see fog and ice in deep winter.

Yes. The SH3 corridor and lakeside roads are asphalted and well travelled, and the climb to Voskopoja is paved though narrow in places. Any standard Abbycar rental handles the full loop without difficulty.

The Ohrid border crossing at Tushemisht is minutes from Drilon, but cross-border travel requires arranging the correct rental paperwork in advance. Confirm border terms when booking your car if you plan to continue around the lake.

Both cities are relaxed by capital standards. Korçë has inexpensive street parking and small paid lots near the bazaar, while Pogradec offers ample free parking along the lakefront outside the peak August evenings.
