The track is rough and stony. A standard car can attempt it slowly in dry weather, but a higher-clearance vehicle is recommended. Check your rental terms regarding unpaved roads.

Where To Stop
Recommended Stops on the Akamas Loop
Five stops from limestone gorge to turtle beach.

Avakas Gorge
A narrow limestone canyon where walls rise 30 metres on either side and you wade through shallow water on the canyon floor. The 3 km trail is flat and accessible with sturdy footwear. Morning light penetrates the gorge most dramatically.

Baths of Aphrodite
A shaded grotto where a natural spring feeds a small pool among fig trees. Legend says Aphrodite bathed here and anyone who drinks the water falls in love. Short marked trails lead to coastal viewpoints above. Free entry, small car park.

Polis Chrysochous & Latchi Harbour
The laid-back town of Polis and its fishing harbour at Latchi form the Akamas's base camp. The fish tavernas here serve the day's catch grilled over charcoal, and the pebble beach is quiet year-round. Boat trips to the Blue Lagoon depart from Latchi.

Blue Lagoon, Akamas
The Akamas's signature cove glows turquoise against white rock. Boat tours from Latchi are the easiest access; the overland track requires a high-clearance vehicle. Snorkelling is excellent and the water is gin-clear.

Lara Bay Turtle Beach
This protected beach is one of the Mediterranean's most important nesting sites for green and loggerhead turtles. Access is via a rough coastal track from the south. The beach is wild, facilities are deliberately absent, and the sense of isolation is total.

Akamas Peninsula FAQs
Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) offer comfortable temperatures for gorge walking and quiet beaches. Summer is hot but the sea is warmest.
Yes, but nesting areas are fenced and protected. Visit during daylight, stay off marked nests, and avoid the beach after dark during nesting season (June-August).
By boat from Latchi (30 minutes, several daily departures) or by 4x4 track. The boat option is easier and includes swimming time.
It is flat and about 3 km return. You may wade through ankle-deep water. Sturdy sandals or water shoes are sufficient. Not recommended in rain due to flash-flood risk.
