While the rest of Cyprus builds, the Akamas Peninsula holds out: a protected wilderness of rocky headlands, pine forests and deserted coves where green and loggerhead turtles still nest. This two-day loop from Paphos threads the Avakas Gorge, a narrow limestone canyon you wade through, past the Baths of Aphrodite where the goddess allegedly bathed, and along the coast to Lara Bay, the island's most important turtle nesting beach. The Blue Lagoon shimmers off the tip of the peninsula, reachable by boat from Latchi or by a rough track for the adventurous. Polis Chrysochous, the friendly town at the peninsula's base, is the natural overnight with excellent fish tavernas.
