Most churches are locked but a local keyholder (often a villager) opens them on request. The Cyprus Tourism Organisation provides contacts. A small donation is appreciated.

Where To Stop
Recommended Stops in the Troodos Mountains
Five stops from vineyard villages to the island's summit.

Omodos Village
A cobbled village square shaded by an enormous vine, a monastery housing relics, and surrounding wineries producing Commandaria, the world's oldest named wine. The village feel is genuine and the wine tasting is the island's best introduction to Cypriot viticulture.

Church of Panagia tou Araka, Lagoudera (UNESCO)
This 12th-century stone-roofed chapel contains some of the finest Byzantine frescoes on the island: vivid, expressive and astonishingly well preserved. The caretaker opens on request; a small donation is customary.

Kakopetria Old Village
The restored old quarter of Kakopetria lines a mountain stream with Ottoman-era stone houses, narrow lanes and the UNESCO-listed church of Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis nearby. It is the quintessential Troodos mountain village and makes a natural overnight base.

Mount Olympus Summit
At 1,952 metres, this is the highest point in Cyprus. A short trail from the car park reaches the summit, which hosts a British military radar dome but also delivers panoramic views from Paphos Bay to Troodos's entire forest canopy.

Caledonia Waterfall Trail, Platres
A 3 km forest trail follows a mountain stream downhill to a 12-metre waterfall surrounded by black pines and plane trees. The path is shaded and well-marked, and the sound of water accompanies every step. Allow ninety minutes for the return walk.

Troodos Mountains FAQs
No. The B8 road to the summit is well-paved and popular. The final section is winding but straightforward for any rental car.
Expect 8-12°C cooler than the coast. Bring a light jacket even in summer, especially for evening in the villages.
Spring for wildflowers, summer for the cool escape, autumn for the grape harvest. Winter brings snow and the small Troodos ski area operates January-March.
Yes, but each deserves two days. A four-day loop from Paphos or Larnaca covers both comfortably with two mountain nights.
