Where To Stop
Recommended Stops Along the Danube
Five stops from medieval fortress to Mesolithic mystery.

Smederevo Fortress
Europe's largest lowland fortress spreads its walls along the Danube downstream of Belgrade. Built in the 15th century as Serbia's last medieval capital, its massive triangular walls and corner towers are free to explore. The town's market and waterfront restaurants make a comfortable first break.

Golubac Fortress
This fairy-tale fortress of nine towers clings to a cliff at the entrance to the Danube gorge. Recently restored with a museum, walking routes and a glass elevator, it is the visual highlight of the trip. The view upstream from the top tower defines the Iron Gates.

Lepenski Vir
On the riverbank beneath a cliff, archaeologists uncovered a 8,000-year-old Mesolithic settlement with remarkable fish-headed stone sculptures. A modern museum protects the site and displays the originals. It is one of Europe's oldest planned settlements and profoundly fascinating.

Đerdap Gorge & Tabula Traiana
At its narrowest, the gorge squeezes the Danube to just 150 metres between 300-metre cliffs. The Roman emperor Trajan carved a road into these cliffs, and his commemorative plaque, the Tabula Traiana, is visible from a boat or the viewpoint above. The road through the gorge is a continuous panorama.

Iron Gates Dam (Đerdap I)
The dam that tamed the Danube stretches 1,278 metres across the river between Serbia and Romania. The engineering scale is impressive, and the area around it offers viewpoints, riverside walks and the small town of Kladovo with its Roman fortress of Fetislam.

Đerdap Danube FAQs
It is paved and generally good, with some narrow, winding sections through the gorge. Confident but unhurried driving is the right approach.
Spring and early autumn offer mild temperatures and low water that reveals more of the gorge features. Summer is hot but the river keeps the gorge cooler than the interior.
The dam has a border crossing but rental car paperwork for Romania must be arranged in advance. Check with Abbycar when booking if you plan to cross.
Yes, from Donji Milanovac and Tekija. The boat perspective reveals the Tabula Traiana inscription and the gorge walls at their most dramatic.
