Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. A rental car is the easiest way to explore western Crete. Destinations such as Elafonisi, Balos, the Samaria Gorge access points and traditional mountain villages are much easier to reach by car than by public transport.

Abbycar offers three convenient rental locations in the Chania area: Chania International Airport (CHQ), Chania Downtown and Tavronitis. This allows visitors to choose the collection point that best matches their holiday plans.

The Balos viewpoint is reached via a 7 km unpaved road after Kissamos. Some rental companies do not allow standard vehicles on this road, so always check your rental agreement before driving there. Alternatively, you can take the boat from Kissamos Port.

The journey takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes (around 75 km), either via the scenic mountain road through Topolia or the coastal route through Kissamos. The mountain route offers beautiful views but requires extra care on narrow roads.

May, June, September and October are generally the best months. Roads are quieter, beaches are less crowded and rental prices are often significantly lower than during the peak summer season.
