Road trips in Bosnia and Herzegovina

You will need a valid driver’s license (International Driving Permit), your passport and a credit card for the security deposit. Age limits and deposit rules differ by car category.

The country drives on the right side of the road, and seat belts are mandatory. Speed limits are enforced, particularly when entering towns and villages. Mobile phone use while driving is prohibited unless hands-free. Expect lower speed limits on mountain roads and canyon routes, where visibility can be limited.

Bosnia and Herzegovina has very limited toll sections, mainly on newer motorways. There is no vignette system. Parking fees apply in city centers, especially in Sarajevo and Mostar. 

Driving is generally safe on main routes, with clear signage and adequate road quality. Rural and mountainous areas have narrow roads, sharp turns and slower traffic. Weather can affect driving in winter, particularly at higher elevations, where you should be extra cautious.

Spring and autumn offer the best balance of mild weather and scenic landscapes. Summer is suitable for longer drives but is hot inside the cities. Winter brings snow to mountain regions, requiring more cautious driving.
