Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge, Višegrad
Commissioned in 1577 by the great architect Sinan, this eleven-arch bridge over the Drina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the silent protagonist of Ivo Andrić's novel The Bridge on the Drina. Walk to the central sofa, the stone seat where townsfolk have gathered for four and a half centuries, and watch the river run luminous green beneath. Early evening light is magical here.

No, entry is only permitted with an official park ranger, arranged through the Sutjeska National Park office at Tjentište. The Dragoš Sedlo viewpoint, however, is freely reachable and delivers the signature panorama over the forest canopy.
Fill up in Sarajevo before departing and again in Foča before entering the park. Stations between Višegrad and Tjentište are few, and the mountain sections consume more fuel than the distances suggest.
The main roads are kept open, but snow chains rules apply in winter months and the Romanija and Sutjeska sections regularly see snow from December to March. The route is at its best from May to October, with autumn colours in the Drina canyon a particular highlight.
It can be driven in a very long day, but the distances and winding roads make it tiring, and both Višegrad at dusk and an early park morning would be lost. An overnight in Višegrad or Foča turns the same kilometres into a genuinely relaxing trip.
