The main road through the Acharistskali valley to Khulo is paved and fine for a standard car. Deeper valley tracks beyond may require higher clearance; check locally.

Where To Stop
Recommended Stops in Adjara
Five stops from subtropical coast to green highland valleys.

Batumi Boulevard & Old Town
Batumi's seven-kilometre seafront boulevard is lined with palm trees, art installations and cafe terraces. The old town behind it holds cobbled lanes, a mosque, a synagogue and a church within two blocks. The evening light on the sea makes a perfect send-off.

Machakhela National Park
The Machakhela valley cuts deep into forested mountains along the Turkish border. Ottoman-era arched bridges span the river, abandoned stone watchtowers guard the ridges, and the forest is among the most pristine in the Caucasus. A ranger station at the entrance can advise on trails.

Khulo & the Cable Car
The highland town of Khulo is the departure point for a spectacular cable car that crosses the valley at great height. The town itself is unremarkable, but the cable car views and the surrounding alpine pastures make the detour worthwhile. The Saturday market is lively.

Dandalo Wooden Mosque
In a valley clearing, this traditional wooden mosque reflects Adjara's Ottoman heritage. The structure is beautifully crafted from local timber and sits among walnut trees. Modest dress is expected; the imam is often happy to show visitors inside.

Makhuntseti Waterfall & Bridge
On the return toward Batumi, this twenty-metre waterfall cascades into a pool perfect for a summer dip, with a graceful Ottoman arched bridge spanning the river nearby. It is the most accessible of Adjara's highland sights and a refreshing final stop.

Adjara Highlands FAQs
June to September offers the best weather, though afternoon rain showers are common in the highlands. May can be wet but the waterfalls are at their most powerful.
The valley road is improving but still narrow in places. A standard car reaches the main sights and trailheads. Inform yourself at the ranger station near the entrance.
Fill up in Batumi before heading inland. There is a station in Khelvachauri on the way south, but nothing reliable deep in the Machakhela valley.
Batumi deserves at least a day: the botanical garden, the old town, the food scene and the sunset boulevard are all excellent. Many travellers spend a night in the city before or after the highland loop.
