No. The highway itself is fully paved and a normal Abbycar rental handles it comfortably. Only the unpaved access road to Gergeti Trinity Church requires a 4x4, and local taxis at Stepantsminda offer this cheaply.

Where To Stop
Recommended Stops on the Military Highway
Five stops that climb from ancient capital to alpine church.

Jvari Monastery & Mtskheta
Georgia's ancient capital sits at the meeting of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers, crowned by the sixth-century Jvari Monastery on a cliff above. Both Jvari and the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral below are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The view from Jvari's terrace is the classic opening shot of Georgia.

Ananuri Fortress
This medieval fortress complex perches on the Aragvi reservoir, its towers and churches reflected in still turquoise water. The interior frescoes are delicate, the views dramatic, and the roadside location makes it an effortless stop.

Friendship Monument & Gudauri
The Soviet-era Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument is a concrete semicircle covered in vivid mosaics, perched above a gorge with views that sweep across the Caucasus. Nearby Gudauri is Georgia's main ski resort, quiet in summer but with a growing trail-running scene.

Jvari Pass (Cross Pass)
At 2,379 metres the Jvari Pass is the highest point of the highway and a natural climatic boundary: green valleys behind, stark alpine terrain ahead. A stone cross and a cluster of mineral-water springs mark the top. In clear weather, the panorama is immense.

Gergeti Trinity Church & Kazbegi
The fourteenth-century stone church sits on a ridge at 2,170 metres, backed by the glaciers of Mount Kazbek at 5,047 metres. The hike up takes about 90 minutes, or local 4x4 taxis drive the track. Stay overnight in Stepantsminda to see sunrise hit the peak.

Georgian Military Highway FAQs
Typically late April/May through October. The Jvari Pass can close after heavy snow. Check road status before setting out in shoulder months.
About three hours of pure driving, but with the stops on this route, plan a full day northbound and enjoy the drive.
Fill up in Tbilisi or Mtskheta. Gudauri has a station. There is no reliable fuel between Gudauri and Stepantsminda.
The marked trail from Stepantsminda takes about 90 minutes uphill on a clear path. It is steep but not technical. Bring water and a layer; the altitude brings cool winds.
