Where To Stop
Recommended Stops in the Kakheti Wine Region
Five stops through the valley that invented wine.

Telavi & the Batonis Tsikhe Fortress
Kakheti's capital sits above the Alazani Valley, its royal fortress now a museum surrounded by an 800-year-old plane tree. The town market sells churchkhela, dried fruit and local cheese. Several notable wineries operate within minutes of the centre.

Alaverdi Monastery
This sixth-century cathedral, one of the tallest religious buildings in Georgia, still produces wine in clay qvevri within its monastery walls. The monks' vineyard sits beside the church, and the austere interior glows with candlelight. Modest dress required.

Tsinandali Estate & Museum
The elegant estate of the nineteenth-century poet Alexander Chavchavadze introduced European winemaking to Georgia without abandoning the qvevri tradition. The gardens are beautiful, the museum tells a romantic story, and the cellar holds wines dating to the 1840s.

Sighnaghi (City of Love)
A walled hilltop town of cobbled lanes, art galleries and Italianate towers gazing over the Alazani Valley to the Caucasus. Sighnaghi was restored in the 2000s and now combines genuine Georgian charm with excellent small hotels, wine bars and the Pheasant's Tears restaurant.

Bodbe Monastery
Just below Sighnaghi, this serene convent set among cypresses guards the grave of St Nino, who brought Christianity to Georgia. A path descends through woodland to a holy spring. The view back to the monastery from the gardens is one of the quietest moments in Kakheti.

Kakheti Wine Road Trip FAQs
Georgian hospitality is generous, so plan a designated driver or book an overnight in Sighnaghi to enjoy tastings fully. Many guesthouses include dinner with wine.
Larger estates like Tsinandali and Schuchmann accept walk-ins. Smaller family cellars benefit from a call ahead; your guesthouse host can usually arrange this.
September and October bring the rtveli (grape harvest), the most atmospheric season. Spring is green and quiet; summer is hot but the shade of cellar visits helps.
It is winding with some steep sections but fully paved. Drive at a relaxed pace, especially if coming from the lowland side where the climb begins abruptly.
