Where To Stop
Recommended Stops from Chania to Elafonisi
Five stops that turn a beach transfer into one of Crete's most varied day drives.

Topolia Gorge & Rock Tunnel
South of Voulgaro the valley narrows into Topolia Gorge, its limestone walls streaked orange and grey, and the road ducks through a rock tunnel cut in the 1940s where wider vehicles wait their turn. Pull-offs above the gorge village offer vertiginous views down to the streambed. Sound the horn gently at the tunnel, take your turn, and enjoy one of Crete's most characterful stretches of tarmac.

Agia Sofia Cave
A short stepped path climbs from the roadside taverna to a cathedral-sized cavern in the gorge wall, where a tiny whitewashed chapel of Agia Sofia shelters beneath stalactites that have grown for millennia. Swallows wheel at the entrance and the view back down the gorge frames the road you just drove. Fifteen minutes is enough, and the taverna's fresh orange juice afterwards has a loyal following.

Elos Chestnut Village
Elos drapes itself across a green fold of the Innachorion hills, shaded by the chestnut trees that give the district its livelihood and its October chestnut festival. Springs run through the village centre, and the tavernas under the plane trees serve slow mountain cooking that has nothing to do with beach-resort menus. It is the perfect early-lunch or late-afternoon stop, depending on your direction.

Chrysoskalitissa Monastery
Ninety-eight steps climb to this brilliant-white monastery fused to a rock above the Libyan Sea; legend insists one step is made of gold, visible only to the pure of heart. The chapel is intimate, the small museum earnest, and the terrace view south along the coast toward Elafonisi is the real treasure. Modest dress is expected, and wraps are available at the entrance.

Elafonisi Beach & Lagoon
Elafonisi is a Natura-protected lagoon where crushed shells blush the white sand pink and the water stays bath-warm and waist-deep all the way to the islet, which you can wade to at low water. Sunbeds cluster near the entrance, but a ten-minute walk along the dunes finds wilder sand beneath the cedars. Snorkels for children, an umbrella for the shadeless hours, and no schedule at all: that is Elafonisi done properly.

Elafonisi Road Trip FAQs
It is mountainous with blind curves and one narrow tunnel in Topolia Gorge, but the surface is good and a calm pace makes it a comfortable drive for any confident driver. Meeting a bus in the tunnel section simply means one vehicle waits; locals handle it with a wave.
The pink comes from crushed shell fragments and is strongest at the waterline and in the dunes, varying with tides and season. Expect rosy streaks against white sand rather than a uniformly pink beach, and you will not be disappointed.
Before 10am, when the lagoon is glassy and parking is easy. Tour buses arrive from late morning until mid afternoon in summer, so early birds get the calm and can spend the busy midday exploring the dunes or the monastery.
Exceptionally so. The lagoon is shallow, warm and free of waves for a long way out, which is why families rate it among the best beaches in Greece for little ones. Bring shade and water shoes, and keep to the lagoon side rather than the open-sea side on windy days.
