Where To Stop
Recommended Stops from Catania to Taormina
Five stops that climb a volcano and descend through myth.

Rifugio Sapienza & Silvestri Craters, Etna
At 1,900 metres on Etna's southern flank, the Rifugio Sapienza marks the end of the paved road and the start of the volcanic zone. The Silvestri craters, formed in a 2001 eruption, are freely walkable and strikingly lunar. Cable cars and 4x4 buses continue to 2,900 metres.

Alcantara Gorge
The Alcantara river has carved a narrow canyon through hexagonal basalt columns of startling geometric regularity. In summer you can wade into the gorge from the riverbed, in spring the water rushes too powerfully, but the columns are at their most dramatic. A lift descends to the gorge floor.

Taormina & the Greek Theatre
Perched on a cliff 200 metres above the Ionian Sea, Taormina's Greek theatre hosts Etna in its backdrop and ranks among the most photographed ancient sites on earth. The Corso Umberto's boutiques and cafe terraces fill the hours around it, and the cable car drops to the beach below.

Aci Trezza & the Cyclops Stacks
Legend says the Cyclops Polyphemus hurled these basalt sea stacks at Odysseus; geologists credit an ancient eruption. The fishing harbour below still lands the day's catch, and the trattorie along the waterfront serve it grilled with lemon. Come for late-afternoon light on the rocks.

Catania Fish Market (La Pescheria)
Under the arches behind Piazza Duomo, Catania's daily fish market is a riot of swordfish, sea urchins and shouting vendors. It operates mornings only and is best experienced hungry. The surrounding street-food stalls sell arancini, horse-meat sandwiches and granita that serve as the unofficial breakfast of eastern Sicily.

Etna & Eastern Sicily FAQs
May to October offers the most reliable access to Etna's upper slopes. Spring wildflowers and autumn colours add beauty. The road to Rifugio Sapienza closes in heavy snow.
Yes. Use the Lumbi car park at the northern entrance and walk or take the shuttle. Do not attempt to drive into the pedestrianised centre.
In summer, yes — you can wade and swim in the shallow stretches. The water is cold even in August, refreshingly so after the heat. Waterproof shoes help on the rocky riverbed.
From Catania to Rifugio Sapienza is about 90 minutes via Nicolosi, on a well-paved winding road. Allow extra time for photo stops on the way up.
