About 30 km or 35 minutes through the foothills. The road climbs gently and the scenery changes quickly from plain to green hills.

Where To Stop
Recommended Stops from Reggio to the Appennines
Five stops from plain to peaks, tracing medieval power and mountain cheese.

Scandiano Castle
The Boiardo castle where the Renaissance poet wrote Orlando Innamorato now hosts exhibitions and a wine cellar. The town below has a lively Saturday market and good cafes for a first stop.

Canossa Castle Ruins
The hilltop where Matilde held court and an emperor begged forgiveness is now atmospheric ruins with a small museum and enormous views. The walk up from the car park takes ten minutes and the sense of history is palpable.

Carpineti Fortress
Another Canossa stronghold perched on a green hill, Carpineti's tower offers a full panorama of the Apennine ridge. The surrounding trails are popular with local walkers and the silence up here is remarkable.

Pietra di Bismantova
Dante referenced this flat-topped rock pinnacle in the Divine Comedy, and the thirty-minute hike to the summit delivers views that justify the literary attention. Rock climbers use the vertical faces; walkers take the marked path from the monastery car park.

Mountain Parmigiano Dairy, Castelnovo ne' Monti
The mountain dairies around Castelnovo produce Parmigiano-Reggiano di Montagna, made from the milk of cows grazing Appennine pastures. The cheese is grainier, grassier, and available for tasting and purchase directly at the dairy.

Canossa & Appennine FAQs
The marked path from the monastery takes about 30 minutes and is moderate. Proper shoes help but it is not a technical climb.
Some welcome walk-ins, but calling a day ahead is strongly recommended. Morning visits are standard as cheese production happens early.
Late spring through early autumn offers the best conditions. The ridge views are clearest in September and October. Winter fog and occasional snow affect the higher sections.
It is a normal winding mountain road, fully paved, that any rental car handles comfortably. Take curves at a relaxed pace and enjoy the scenery.
