Vehicles cross from Klaipėda's New Ferry terminal at Smiltynė; the crossing takes about five minutes and runs frequently all day. On landing you pay the Neringa municipality entrance fee, which is significantly higher from June to August than in the off season.

Where To Stop
Recommended Stops from Vilnius to Nida
Five stops that carry you from baroque capital to Baltic dunes.

Kaunas Old Town
Lithuania's interwar capital rewards a two-hour wander: the gothic House of Perkūnas, the white swan of a Town Hall, and Vilniaus gatvė's cafes all sit within a compact grid at the meeting of two rivers. Kaunas wears its recent European Capital of Culture status well, with murals and galleries tucked between the merchant houses. Convenient paid parking lies just east of the old town.

Klaipėda Old Town & Theatre Square
Lithuania's only port city has a distinctly German accent, a legacy of its centuries as Memel: half-timbered warehouses, cobbled lanes and the little Ännchen von Tharau statue watching over Theatre Square. It is the perfect place for an early dinner before or after the ferry, and the Dane riverfront is lovely at dusk. The vehicle ferry to the Spit departs from the New Ferry terminal south of the centre.

Hill of Witches, Juodkrantė
In the forest above the village of Juodkrantė, a winding trail passes some eighty carved oak sculptures of witches, devils and heroes from Lithuanian folklore, created by artists since 1979. It is playful, faintly eerie and completely free, with dappled light that photographers love. Afterwards, drop down to the lagoon promenade for smoked fish, a Curonian institution, from one of the family smokehouses.

Parnidis Dune & Sundial
Rising 52 metres above the lagoon just south of Nida, the Parnidis Dune is the emotional summit of the Spit. A boardwalk climbs to the granite sundial at the top, where pale sand sweeps away toward the Kaliningrad border in genuinely Saharan fashion. Come for sunset, when the dune glows amber and the lagoon turns to silver. Stay on the marked paths; the dune is fragile and protected.

Nida Fishing Village
Nida is the Spit distilled: blue and brown wooden cottages trimmed with white lace bargeboards, carved weathervanes along the harbour, and the scent of smoked bream drifting from garden smokehouses. Thomas Mann summered here in the 1930s and his hillside cottage is now a small museum. Rent a bike, walk the lagoon path, or simply take a table at the waterfront and let the evening settle in.

Curonian Spit Road Trip FAQs
If you want to combine Juodkrantė, the dunes, quieter beaches and Nida in your own rhythm, a car is by far the most flexible option, and essential for a three-day loop from Vilnius. Budget-focused day visitors sometimes prefer the passenger ferry and local bus instead.
Around two hours and forty-five minutes on the A1 motorway, Lithuania's fastest road. Adding a Kaunas Old Town stop makes it a relaxed half-day, timed nicely for an afternoon ferry crossing.
Late May, June and September offer warm weather, lower entrance fees and light ferry queues. July and August bring the liveliest atmosphere but also weekend waits at the ferry, so cross midweek or early in the morning if visiting in peak season.
The road does continue to the Russian border a few kilometres south of Nida, but rental vehicles cannot cross it. Treat the border as the natural turning point of the route and enjoy the viewpoint over the dunes before heading back north.
