About 130 kilometres, or roughly ninety minutes on the A4, one of the quietest main roads in the country. The route is flat and well surfaced year round, making it one of the easiest drives in Lithuania.

Where To Stop
Recommended Stops in Southern Lithuania
Five stops that mix forest air, river views, spa comfort and an unflinching look at the past.

Merkinė Observation Tower
A striking modern spiral of steel rising from the forest edge, the Merkinė tower lifts you above the treetops to a wide view over the meeting of the Nemunas and Merkys rivers. The gentle ramp makes it accessible for all ages, and the panorama of river loops and unbroken pinewood is the best single introduction to Dzūkija's landscape. Free parking sits at the base.

Grūtas Park
When Lithuania regained independence, its Soviet statues had to go somewhere; dozens of Lenins, Stalins and partisan monuments ended up here, arranged along woodland paths with watchtowers and information panels that pull no punches about the era they represent. It is strange, sobering and genuinely educational, with a small zoo and playground softening the visit for families. Allow around ninety minutes.

Druskininkai Spa Town
Lithuania's most famous resort earns its reputation with mineral springs, a leafy riverside promenade, and wellness options that range from classic sanatorium treatments to the vast Aqua Park and the year-round Snow Arena ski slope. Elegant wooden villas line the quiet streets, and the town lake fills with paddle boats in summer. It is the natural overnight base of this route, with parking plentiful and inexpensive.

Liškiava Monastery Hill
A short, lovely drive downstream from Druskininkai, Liškiava crowns a hill above a sweeping Nemunas bend with a domed baroque church, monastery buildings and the stub of a medieval castle tower. The interior frescoes are delicate, the churchyard views are broad, and the whole site has a stillness that rewards an unhurried half hour. Combine it with a riverside picnic below the hill.

Zervynos Village, Dzūkija National Park
Zervynos is an ethnographic village of dark timber farmsteads strung along the Ūla river, protected as a living monument of Dzūkija tradition. Wooden crosses, storks' nests and sandy lanes set the scene; short marked trails lead into the surrounding pinewood, and in late summer the forest floor is a mushroom-picker's paradise. It makes a quietly perfect final stop before the drive back to Vilnius.

Southern Lithuania Road Trip FAQs
Very much so. Driving legs are short, Druskininkai's Aqua Park and Snow Arena are built for families, Grūtas Park includes a small zoo and playground, and the forest trails are flat and stroller-friendly in dry weather.
Every season has a character: spring for river walks, summer for swimming and village life, and September to October for legendary mushroom and berry season when the forests glow gold. Winter is peaceful but some rural services close.
The main routes to Zervynos, Marcinkonys and Liškiava are paved and fine for any rental. Deeper forest tracks turn to sand and are best explored on foot or by bike, so park at the village trailheads and walk in.
For summer weekends and public holidays, yes, both spa centres and the Aqua Park fill up. Midweek visitors can usually book a day ahead. Having a car also lets you stay in quieter guesthouses outside the centre at better rates.
